If your child was born in 2022, like mine — hiiiii mama!
That means next year is the big leap: Kindergarten.
I know, I know. Where did the time go?
But don’t worry, I’ve got you.
Let me introduce you to our new series:
Kindie Countdown: A Year of Little Wins Before Big School
Every month, I’ll share two simple things you can start doing with your little one from September 2025 – August 2026 to gently prepare for kindergarten.

We’re not talking flashcards or pressure, just everyday life skills like opening their lunch box, taking turns, or putting on a jacket. These little wins build confidence and independence, one step at a time.
The reason I’m starting now is to give you time.
Time to try. Time to adjust. Time to let it sink in.
Because these aren’t one-time lessons. They’re small habits that grow with practice. So if you’ve been waiting for a sign to start, this is it.
Skill 1: Potty Training
Okay. Let’s be honest. Potty training is not a “check-it-off-in-one-weekend” kind of thing.
It’s a journey. A process. Sometimes a bit of a mess (literally).
Whether your little one is just getting started or almost there, this is a great time to gently focus on it again.

Here’s what you can work on:
- Can they pee or poop without prompting?
- Can they pull their pants up and down by themselves?
- Do they know how to flush after pooping?
- Can they do the whole flush, wipe, wash routine without reminders?
This is a skill we’re still practicing in our house too.
We’re in the thick of it, honestly. And soon I’ll share what actually helped , and what didn’t — because let’s be real, every child (and mom) learns differently.
Skill 2: Putting On and Taking Off Shoes
It sounds so small, but this skill makes a big difference at daycare, at church, at the park, and of course, at school.
Here’s what we’re practicing:
- Sitting down to put shoes on the right feet
- Doing up Velcro straps
- Taking shoes off and putting them where they belong
Bonus points if they can figure out which foot goes where without help!
Even if they fumble, the key is letting them try.
That confidence boost is what it’s all about.
Bonus Skill: Flush, Wipe, Wash
If your child can already go potty, awesome — but don’t skip this step.
Practice doing the whole process:
Flush.
Wipe (or start learning how).
Wash hands well.
We’ve been breaking it down into steps and sometimes singing silly songs about it. Whatever works, right?
You’ve Got This
This month is all about helping your child build independence in tiny, doable ways.
No pressure. No rush. Just progress.

And if your little one is already a potty champ or shoe pro, maybe it’s time to check out my “Teaching Kids to Read and Write” series. That might be your next thing — and I’ve got ideas for that too.
Want me to just email this to you every month?
If saving posts or pinning stuff feels like too much, you can just sign up here and I’ll send you two fun things to work on every month.
Simple. Doable. And always on time (unlike my laundry).
Let’s get ready for kindergarten — one small win at a time 💛
