When I walked into the dollar store the other day, I was excited to find some Easter activities for my kids.
The shelves were full of colorful eggs, bunnies, baskets, and candy.
It was fun, but something important was missing.
Nothing in the store was about the true meaning of Easter.
As Christian parents, we know Easter is not just about egg hunts and chocolates.
Easter is the greatest love story ever told. It reminds us that Jesus took the punishment for our sins. He died on the cross, was buried, and rose again on the third day. Good Friday marks His sacrifice, and Easter Sunday celebrates His victory over sin and death. Because of Jesus, anyone who believes in Him can be forgiven and receive eternal life. Easter is a reminder of hope, joy, and new beginnings.
That’s why I created this simple guide for teaching kids the true meaning of Easter in a fun, easy way.
It is an easy and fun way to teach your kids the Easter story using colors. Even babies and toddlers can understand it. But before we dive in, Let us take some time to understand why we need to pray.
Why Pray Before Teaching?
Before you begin teaching the Easter story, take a moment to pray.
Here’s why:
- Kids are never too young for the Holy Spirit.
- Only God can open their hearts to understand.
- We are planting seeds that will last forever.
- We need God’s help to teach with love and patience.
Short Sample Prayer
“Dear Holy Spirit,
Please open my child’s heart.
Help them see Your love and understand Your truth.
Let this simple lesson plant seeds that grow forever.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
What is the wordless book?
When I was a child in Sunday school, I was introduced to the Wordless Book. I remember thinking it was one of the simplest and most remarkable ways to learn about God’s love.
A special shoutout to Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) , they had a huge influence on my life. From Bible stories to teaching kids about missions, CEF provided so many resources to help children know Christ.
I even took two courses on how to teach kids, and to this day, I still find myself going back to the teaching manuals whenever I need a refresher.
But back to the Wordless Book…
The Wordless Book uses five simple colors to teach kids the true meaning of Easter.
- Gold 👑 — God’s perfect home (Heaven)
- Dark 😔 — The problem of sin
- Red ❤️ — Jesus’ love and sacrifice
- Clean 🤍 — Forgiveness and a clean heart
- Green 🌱 — Growing every day with Jesus
No complicated words needed. Just colors, real-life objects, and simple conversations with your child.
Easter for Babies and Toddlers (0–2 Years)
I strongly believe that even the tiniest heart can start learning about Easter.
One of the Easiest way is to use board books. I have done some research and I will link it in the resource section of this blogpost.
If you have started teaching colors, you can simply introduce the wrodless book just showing thm the colors and saying:
- Gold — “God loves you!” 👑
- Dark— “Sin makes us sad.” 😔
- Red — “Jesus loves you.” ❤️
- Clean— “Jesus makes you All clean.” 🤍
- Green — “You can grow with Jesus.” 🌱
Sing short songs like “Jesus Loves Me” or “He’s Alive.”
Easter for Little Kids (3–6 Years)
For preschoolers and kindergarteners, you can go a little deeper using real-life objects.
To begin teaching this, you can actually create your own Wordless Book together.
Tell your child you’re going to make a special storybook; but this one has no words!
Use a few sheets of A4 paper, cut them to the same size, and let your child help you choose, staple, or glue the colored pages together.
This can be your fun activity for Day One.
Then, each day after that, focus on one color, talk about what it means, and let them flip through their special book as they learn.
By the end of the week, your child will have their very own Easter storybook — one they helped make and understand.
But if you don’t have time to make the book, that’s okay too.
You can still teach the colors by simply showing them — using crayons, colored paper, or even toys around the house.
What matters most is the conversation and connection.
Here is a simple way to walk through each color with your child. Feel free to make it fun and personal. This is just a gentle starting point:
Day One: Gold 👑 — God’s Perfect Home
Show: Something gold like a ring, gold paper, or necklace.
You can say:
“God made everything (the stars, the flowers, the oceans) and He made you. He loves you so much and lives in Heaven, a beautiful and perfect place. He wants you to be with him forever. Heaven is holy and pure, and because of that, there is something that cannot be in Heaven….”
(This will link to the next page)
💡 Pro-tip: You can ask your child about things that God made.
Day Two: Dark 🖤 — Our Problem (Sin)
Show: Something black like a shirt, crayon, or toy.
Say:
“One thing that cannot enter heaven is sin. Sin is when we make wrong choices, like lying or being unkind. It makes our hearts dirty and keeps us away from God’s perfect home. But God has a plan to fix that!“
💡 Pro-tip: You can also mention everyday things your child does, or relate them to situations they experience at daycare or while playing with friends.
The more relatable the example of sin is, the better they will understand.
Day Three: Red ❤️ — Jesus’ Sacrifice
Say:
“God loves you so much, He sent Jesus to take the punishment for our sins. Jesus is perfect and never did anything wrong. He died on the cross, shedding His blood to make our dark hearts clean. Three days later, He rose again. This is what Easter is all about!!
“That’s what Jesus did for us. He gave His life so that our hearts can be all clean”.
Day Four: Clean 🤍 — A Clean Heart
You can say,
Say:
“When we believe in Jesus and ask Him to forgive us, He washes all the sin away. Clean page reminds us that Jesus’ blood makes our hearts clean and new. God sees us with hearts that are pure and full of His love.”
Explain further:
“When your heart is clean, it means you can be close to God again. And if you’ve never told Jesus you want Him to be in your life, you can do that anytime. You can talk to Him and say, ‘Jesus, I believe in You. Please forgive my sins and help me follow You.’ He hears you and loves you.”
Day Five: Green 🌱 — Growing with Jesus
You can Say
“Green reminds me of trees. Just like trees grow bigger and stronger, we can grow in Christ. We grow by going to Sunday School, reading the Bible, and praying. You can ask your mom to tell you Bible stories and pray with you. We also grow by obeying God and telling our friends about Jesus.“
You do not have to teach everything at once. For example, you can focus on one color each day over a week and have simple conversations with your little one.
This gentle, color-a-day approach makes teaching kids the true meaning of Easter feel natural, not overwhelming.
I actually created a chart a few months ago that shows the best times to have these talks throughout the day. You can find it here:

Play some Easter songs. Music is a powerful way to help your child understand and remember truth. Why not add a few to your playlist? You can play them while running errands, during school drop-off and pick-up, or even while making dinner. Little moments like these can turn into meaningful faith conversations.
I’m also planning to fill our week with meaningful Easter activities, and I’ll be using this fun activity book I found on Amazon to help.
Crafts
Another fun hands-on activity is creating a Wordless Book bracelet using beads or paper to represent each part of the Easter story:
- Gold = Heaven
- Dark = Sin
- Red = Jesus’ blood
- Clean (Clear) = A clean heart
- Green = Growing in Christ
String the colors in order on yarn, string, or elastic to make a bracelet your child can wear throughout Easter week.
It’s a great way to help them remember the message wherever they go.
Memory Verse for Easter
John 3:16
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
Encourage your child to memorize this during Easter week. Here’s a simple way to break it down so they can understand:
You can help your toddler learn John 3:16 by using simple symbols they can see and remember. You can even use your hand to draw these symbols.
💖🌍 God loves everyone — including you.
Show a heart and a world. Remind your child that God made the world and loves every single person.
✝️ He sent Jesus to show His love.
Show a cross . Explain that Jesus came from Heaven because God loves us so much.
🙏 We can believe and trust in Jesus.
Show praying hands . Tell your child that when we believe Jesus is God’s Son, we are trusting Him.
🛑 We will not be lost or far from God.
Show a stop sign. Remind them that Jesus saves us so we do not have to stay far from God.
🌟 Instead, we will live with God forever.
Show a star. Explain that we can live with God forever in His beautiful home called Heaven.
You can go over one line each day or repeat it during snack time, car rides, or bedtime.
Make it fun and talk about what each part means in your child’s own words.

As you say the verse, point to the matching symbols. You can also use hand motions to draw the symbols in the air. This makes learning even easier and more fun.
Final Thoughts
Easter is more than a holiday. It is a beautiful opportunity to plant truth in your child’s heart.
Through simple colors and gentle conversations, you are quietly teaching your kids the true meaning of Easter in a way they will carry with them.
You do not have to get it perfect. Just show up with love, and let God do the rest.
